Fall 2022

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Dear Friend,

Year after year, the fall brings a revitalizing energy with the cooler weather, new routines and schedules, saturated hues of color, and cherished memories from the summer. At Live It Learn It, we spent the summer updating our curricula to align closely with DCPS units, building out donor engagement and long-term organizational strategies, cultivating our anti-bias anti-racist principles, and spending quality time with one another outside our work days (truly a gift!).

We anticipate this new school year will be one for the books – and we are so excited that you are a part of it with us! As you’ll read in The Progress Report, we have many exciting updates to share with you. From new faces to new partnerships, the fall is brimming with possibilities! Thank you for standing alongside us as we continue to adapt and grow as a staff to better serve our students.

Sincerely,
The Live It Learn It Team

Gearing Up for SY22-23!

Our favorite time of year is finally here! We are eager to get back in the classroom with our bright and brilliant students. Our Programming team will be moving all across the city teaching 17 different curricula units in 12 schools to 80+ classes at 14 partner destinations (including our latest addition — National Museum of American History. This year, we are thrilled to be working with schools in all four quadrants in the city!

Thank you for joining us in bringing new experiences to students year after year. We could not do what we do without you!

Fresh Fellows

We are elated to welcome our first-ever Fellows, Julia Tokeshi and Maya Hogarth, to the LILI Programming team. Julia (left) is a recent American Studies graduate of GW University and has spent time in Japan and Czech Republic. Having worked with the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, Julia is already quite familiar with our experiential spaces and is excited to bring her passions for culture and education to our work. Maya (right) has interned at the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She is finishing up her master's degree in Museum Studies at Johns Hopkins and looks forward to carrying out LILI's mission throughout our city. Both of these Fellows bring so much to the table and we can't wait to see them in action!

JEDIs in Training
Our Senior Leadership Team has begun a six-part series with CrimsonBridge Foundation's Leadership Initiative on how to create long-term solutions and explore the intersections of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the workplace.

All Aboard!
Our Board of Directors plays an integral role in overseeing operations here at Live It Learn It and contributes so much to the organization as a whole. And that’s why we are thrilled to be welcoming five brand new board members to join our team. Each one brings their own unique perspectives, skills, and experiences to the collective table, making us stronger than ever. Among just a few of their many attributes, we’re adding an accomplished DCPS teacher, a photographer and educator, an entrepreneur specializing in financial analysis, a mortgage professional with a focus on narrowing the racial wealth gap, and an individual with deep tenure in K-12 public education. Wondering who’s who? Check out all of their bios here!

Marching the Monuments
This summer, Maryam and Kat facilitated a session for educators across the DMV as a part of Washington International School's Summer Institute for Teachers. The unit's guiding question was "How much hasor hasn'tchanged since the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom?" The experience began at the Washington Monument, the meeting place for volunteers and marchers to hand out and pick up materials the day of the March. WISSIT participants carried on to the Lincoln Memorial, investigating first-hand accounts of the organizers and speakers that day. Educators shared their perspectives around injustices that still exist today and ways to address them in their own classrooms.
Words of appreciation from WISSIT participants:

"Museum Day was easily my favorite. I spent the morning with Live It Learn It reflecting on the human side of history and trying to convince Kat and Maryam to expand to VA schools!"

"This was a great session
the facilitators gave us important info without overloading us, and it was such a great example of experiential learning!"

"Being in the same footprints as these historical figures/events was certainly a powerful physical connection."
