Sharon Wiener

Sharon (she/her) spent more than three decades as a US Foreign Service Officer, serving in high-profile assignments in the State Department and in key diplomatic posts abroad, including Paris, Moscow, Cairo, and Istanbul. Prior to her diplomatic career, she was already focused on the importance of education as a university political science instructor in Turkey, and, representing the US while raising her two children abroad was a consummate experiential learning experience. Sensitized while overseas to the economic and educational inequities of America's capital city, upon retiring and returning permanently to Washington DC, Sharon decided to engage in ways to address these local problems. She has been active with the DC "village" movement aimed at helping seniors age in place and has participated in elementary school tutoring in Anacostia. Sharon holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Duke.  Her undergraduate work at Ohio Wesleyan University included a junior year abroad at the American University of Beirut.
