Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum

During their trip to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, students explore the lives and customs of Native Americans as depicted in paintings by George Catlin during his travels to the Great Plains in the 1830s.  Student examine many aspects of Plains Indian life documented by Catlin, including the vital role of the buffalo, types of homes used on the Great Plains, and the materials and symbols used in Plains Indians' clothing.  During follow-up activities back in the classroom, students create their own "power shirts" modeled after those they observed at the Renwick.  Students select and incorporate symbols that reflect their own identity.
