National Gallery of Art--Modern Art
| Students display their sketches of Matisse's cutouts. In the Fauve room of the Gallery, students discuss what they see in a Matisse painting. | Pre-trip lesson: Students are introduced to Modern Art by exploring its characteristics and key artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Students examine how modern artists broke away from more traditional artistic styles and set out to create new and more exciting forms of art. Students explore Picasso’s different styles, with a focus on his Blue Period and Cubism. They also examine Matisse’s use of color and patterns and learn about his cut-outs. Trip: At the Museum, students analyze works of art by modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse, paying particular attention to elements such as color, shape, abstraction, and materials. Post-trip lesson: Back in the classroom, students create their own modern art pieces inspired by Matisse or Picasso. Students also test their knowledge of modern art as they compete in a collaborative review game and take written assessments.
