Living Classrooms Boat Trip

A class gets ready to throw the trawl net and catch some fish.

Students examine snails they caught in the net.

Students use binoculars to spot birds and other wildlife.
Pre-trip lesson: This program introduces students to an aquatic food web, and the role of various organisms within the ecosystem. Students describe and compare producers and consumers, and then compare the different types of consumers. They also study the role of plankton in the aquatic food web. Finally, students learn the history of the Half Shell (the boat on which they will travel) and use a map to identify the bodies of water they will visit during the trip.

Trip: During this Living Classrooms-led trip, students catch and identify fish, dissect clams, and use a microscope to examine plankton - all while enjoying stunning views of their city!   While on the boat, students also test water quality and learn about buoyancy by building small boats.

Post-Trip lesson: Students share their Living Classrooms experience with others by writing a reflection essay. Using a page of photographs from their trip to guide them, students choose and describe their two favorite activities, reflecting on what they liked about and learned from each activity. Students also test their knowledge of the food chain as they compete in a collaborative review game and take written assessments.

Academic Standards: Reading (5.LD-V.8) Mathematics (5.NSO-F.8); Science (5.4.8)
