International Spy Museum
![]() At the museum, students memorize information for their covers and explore the history of espionage. ![]() Students strike their best spy position. | Pre-trip lesson: This program introduces students to the world of espionage. Students learn about covers and legends and what it takes to be a good spy. The lesson also focuses on methods and tools that spies used. Students examine different instances of espionage throughout history, highlighting events such as World War I and the Cold War. While learning about espionage in history, students learn about the advantages of spying and how it has evolved throughout history. Trip: At the museum, students further explore how spying has changed over time. Students observe various spying tools, learn about different spying methods, and even try their hand at spying through observation, analysis, and disguise. Post-trip lesson: As a culminating activity, students create their own skytales, an ancient Greek cipher, with coded messages written on them. Students then exchange the skytales and decode each other’s messages. Students also test their knowledge of espionage as they compete in a collaborative review game and take written assessments.
