Anacostia Watershed Society - Wetland Planting
This unit gives students the opportunity to help restore the Anacostia River's natural balance by planting native species, whose numbers have been greatly reduced by the large population of resident Canada Geese. While at the River, students participate in two activities. They prepare and plant seeds, which will be raised to seedlings before being planted along the river. And, they don boots and trudge out into the marsh where they plant wild rice, arrow arum, pickerelweed, spatterdock, and other native plants. An AWS educator discusses the Anacostia watershed with students before they being planting. (top left) Students hard at work planting arrow arum in the marsh along the Anacostia River.
