The Phillips Collection--Elements of Art

A student presents the lines she drew and
asks classmates to identify them.

Using Jacob Lawrence's art as inspiration,
students create drawings using geometric and
organic shapes.

After discussing how color affects mood in Georgia O'Keefe's art, each student uses certain colors to convey a specific mood.
Pre-trip lesson: Students explore the basic elements of art including composition, line, shape, space, color, and texture. Students learn about two- and three-dimensional works of art; how lines are used to create patterns and movement; organic and geometric shapes; the color wheel and how color is used to portray mood, depth and perspective; and how texture is used to enhance works of art.

Trip: At the Museum students become art detectives, exploring various paintings and sculptures by analyzing the choices artists make in creating their work. Students view works by modern artists such as Rothko, Picasso, Braque, and Renoir.

Post-trip lesson
: As a culminating activity, students create their own work of art using various mediums. In addition to the artwork, students write short descriptions describing their reasons for
the artistic choices made. Students also test their knowledge of the basic elements of art as they compete in a collaborative review game and take written assessments.
